CAFCI Student Assistance Awards
Photos by Carol Porter The 24th annual Caribbean Americans for Community Involvement’s (CAFCI) Student Assistance Awards were held on Saturday, May 10 at the Kevin Harvin Center in Royal Palm Beach. Eleven honorees were recognized from the western communities. Speakers at the event included County Commissioner Jess Santamaria, representatives from the Royal Palm Beach Village Council and also from CAFCI. The main speakers at the event were Dr. Elaine Ealy and Dr. Stephanie Nance of CypressTrailsElementary School. My Brothers Sisters Keeper 2013 Scholarship Awards were held on Friday, May 10, at the Original Wellington Mall’s center Court. The scholarship awards are an annual tradition in the western communities where students from schools are recognized for their good citizenship and exemplary character rather than just good grades. Scholarship honorees came from schools in the communities of Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, Loxahatchee, the Acreage and the Glades. vvv May, 2013 – Women of the Western Communities’ Fundraiser

The Women of the Western Communities held a fundraising luncheon, Fun in the Sun: A Journey through Florida, on Sunday, May 5, at the Wanderers Club from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The luncheon event featured a 45-minute medley performance by the award-winning, female a cappella chorus Women of Note, as well as food, a silent auction, a Chinese auction and a raffle. The event raised money for YWCA Harmony House, a safe house for women and children who are victims of domestic violence and abuse, and also the organization’s scholarship fund which will be awarded in June. vvv May, 2013 – Annual Women in Leadership Awards

The Executive Women of the Palm Beaches held their 30th annual Women in Leadership Awards luncheon on Thursday, May 2, at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach. The honorees included Palm Beach County Tax Collector Anne M. Gannon, attorney Jane Kreusler-Walsh and businesswoman Michele Poole. The keynote speaker at the luncheon was Lilly Ledbetter, a brave woman who became famous after her battle with the Supreme Court for making sure that women get equal pay for equal work. As one of his duties after being sworn into office, President Barack Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law on January 29, 2009.
