June, 2009 - Nicole’s Helmet Law Signed by Charlie Crist
Nicole’s Law Signed by Governor Charlie Crist
On June 8, 2009, Florida Governor Charlie Crist signed the “ Helmet” Law into legislation. A group of approximately 80 of Nicole Hornstein’s family, friends and Florida legislators were on hand to witness the signing of the bill at Hamlin Park in the Acreage.
The Helmet law or “Nicole’s law” was named after 12-year-old Nicole Hornstein who was killed tragically in 2006, after her horse stumbled and Nicole was thrown to the pavement. She died after spending 20 days in a coma.
The law requires riders under the age of 16 to wear helmets while riding on public trails, lands and parks.
Nicole’s family was instrumental in getting the bill before Florida state legislators. The bill goes into effect Oct. 1, 2009.
